The West Chester Area School District utilizes universal screeners and district assessments to gather information regarding students’ academic abilities to inform instruction. Assessments are intentionally dispersed throughout the school year to create a balance between instruction and assessment.

DIBELS
The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) are a set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of early literacy skills. Short fluency measures aim to monitor the development of early reading skills.

DRA
The Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) is an individually administered assessment tool used by instructors to identify a student’s reading level, accuracy, fluency, and comprehension.

District Writing Prompts
One district assessment for each genre (narrative, informational, opinion, and end-of-year) is administered during the genre’s instruction to assess students’ writing abilities.

An assessment is administered to gauge students’ proficiency with grade level mathematics standards within each trimester (K assessments are administered at mid and end-of year).

Elementary Spelling Inventory
The Spelling Inventory identifies students’ spelling developmental stage based on a variety of spelling features at increasing levels of difficulty. Features may include, but are not limited to, consonants, digraphs, blends, and short vowels.

The Naglieri is a nonverbal test that utilizes shapes and figures to evaluate problem-solving and reasoning abilities of a child without relying on their language skills. This assessment is used for early screening for gifted services.

The TOMAGS is a standardized, norm-referenced test designed to measures students’ abilities with regard to mathematical reasoning and problem solving. This assessment is used for early screening for gifted services.

The Orleans-Hanna is an algebra prognosis assessment that assists in sixth grade math placements.
