School Nurse Health Services

  • Health Services at East Bradford Elementary

The mission of the WCASD Health Services Department is to provide skilled nursing assessments and State mandated screenings in order to promote the health and education of all students (State mandated screenings include height/weight/bmi/vision every year for every student k-5, and hearing for k-3). These screenings are generally done at or near the beginning of every school year by the nurse. Parents are then informed via phone call, mailing, or email if a student does not pass his/her vision or hearing screening. BMI and screening results are sent home each year.

“You can’t educate a child who isn’t healthy and you can’t keep a child healthy who isn’t educated.” ~Jocelyn Elders

Students receive a yellow emergency medical information form included in a envelop sent home the first day of school . Please note any changes in phone numbers or any other information directly on this form, then sign and date it. It should be returned to your child’s teacher the next day. Any future change in phone numbers, your child’s health status, and/or medication should be reported to the school nurse as it arises. This form is absolutely necessary.

A nurse is available for all phases of the school health program including first aid for student illness or injuries that occur during school hours. The health office at EBE is covered by two registered nurses:

    Ms. Kate Yocum email: cyocum@wcasd.net

The direct phone number is 484-266-2106.

    School fax: 484-266-2199.

    Medications at School

All medications must be kept in the nurse’s office. Parents must check the yellow emergency medical form to approve the administration of Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Antacid, or Benadryl (given for severe allergic reaction only).

*Ibuprofen (Motrin/Advil) may be sent in with a parent note to administer if your child needs liquid or chewable.

ALL other medications must meet the following requirements if it is necessary for your child to take medication (prescription or non-prescription) while at school:

    • A health care provider’s (M.D./D.O.) note indicating the medication is to be given during school hours must accompany the medication, including date, time of medication administration, and dosage. (The pharmacy label does not meet this requirement). A parent/guardian note requesting medication administration at school as prescribed by the health care provider.
    • Prescription medication must be clearly labeled in the original, most current container from the pharmacy. The medication container must clearly indicate: student name, medication, medication dosage, administration instructions, and the health care provider’s name. This includes epi-pens or inhalers.
    • Non-prescription medication must be in the original, labeled container with a visible expiration date (medication will not be given if it is past the expiration date.) Non-prescription medications should agree to the description in the current edition of the PDR for non-prescriptions drugs. This includes herbal medications, as well as cough or cold remedies.

No student is permitted to keep any medication in his/her possession (including cough drops, throat sprays, eye drops, etc.).

    When to Keep Kids Home

    • An ill child should remain at home until free of all symptoms for 24 hours (without the need of fever-reducing medication), including, but not limited to, persistent diarrhea, vomiting, or a fever >99.8 degrees.
    • In case of contagious illness (i.e. chicken pox, impetigo), or a case of head lice: Please contact the school nurse so that we can watch for other cases and advise you about when your child can return to school.
    • Respiratory illness must be determined on a case-by-case basis. If your child has a history of asthma, your health care provider should advise you about treatment. Even children without asthma have difficulty focusing on learning when they have a persistent, hacking cough. Please help us limit the spread of germs by keeping ill children home, and by also reinforcing proper hand-washing technique and cough etiquette.
