Family and Consumer Science

  • The overall goal of Family and Consumer Sciences is to provide students with the life skills necessary to strengthen families and, thereby, strengthen communities. The 6th grade Family and Consumer Sciences curriculum provides the young adolescent with the opportunity to develop essential life skills based on developing self-esteem; forming interpersonal relationships; basic food preparation; nutrition and healthy eating; textile studies; decision making; and personal resource management. Students gain experience using hands-on activities with an emphasis on critical thinking skills and problem-based learning. The completion of a service project enables the students to develop a better understanding of their importance within the community as a whole. The activities prepare 6th-grade students for transition into 7th grade Family and Consumer Sciences. This class meets two days of the six-day cycle for two marking periods.
