How long will WCASD be closed?

On April 9, 2020, PA Governor Tom Wolf announced that all schools in the state will remain closed for the rest of the school year.

What does the structure of Remote Learning look like for the rest of the year?

Educators will provide learning resources for specific grades and content areas according to the adjusted calendar  Instruction will take place over four days with a fifth day used for teachers to plan, prepare, and provide feedback to students on work submitted.

At the elementary level (Grades K-5), essential learning opportunities in Reading, Writing, and Math will be delivered to students through a variety of means, including but not limited to SeeSaw, Schoology, Zoom, FlipGrid, and email. Students will have the opportunity to engage in Science and Social Studies lessons also.  Teachers will share daily and weekly lessons with families and maintain strong classroom communities.  Teachers will provide specific feedback to individuals on work completed; they will reach out to families if students are not participating.  

At the secondary level (Grades 6-12), teachers will develop continuity of essential learning through Schoology where lessons will be posted and feedback provided.  Four 90-minute block periods will be offered each day for both instruction and office hours.  Periods 1, 3, 5, 7 will meet on days designated as “odd” days, and periods 2, 4, 6, 8 will meet on “even” days.  Educators will deliver instruction using a variety of media including but not limited to live and/or recorded video on Zoom, EdPuzzle, FlipGrid, Kahn Academy, or other platforms for both synchronous and asynchronous learning.

When is the last day of school for students?

The last day of school will be Friday, June 5. The Pennsylvania Department of Education has waived the 180-day requirement.

My child does not have an iPad or tablet to access the internet to complete work online, nor do we have internet access at home. What can we do?

How will teacher assignments be distributed?

Grades 6 - 12 - Assignments are delivered online through Schoology.
Grades 3 - 5 - Assignments are also delivered through Schoology for parents and students to access.
Grades K - 2 - Assignments are sent via email.

Are the assignments being graded?

Yes. For the 4th Marking Period, we're moving to a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (Pass/Fail) grading system. Please click here to review grading procedures for high school and middle school students.

We are not issuing grades for elementary students for the third trimester, but teachers will provide feedback.

Is supplemental work available for students in grades K-5?

Yes, optional supplemental work for students K-5 is available here. 

Will attendance matter?

Yes. Beginning April 13 there will be a new attendance taking procedure for all secondary students. It is very important that we can account for students. Otherwise, we cannot issue course credit. Secondary students will log into their Schoology Homeroom Course to check-in for attendance. We are offering this new attendance procedure during the school closure to simplify the attendance process. Students will enter attendance for each instructional day on the day of instruction. The system will not allow students to enter multiple days of attendance at one time.

The attendance taking procedure for elementary students remains the same. Elementary teachers will count students present as work is posted in Seesaw and/or Schoology, or, they can confirm attendance via email from a parent/caregiver.

Will teachers be available for help while students complete work using the online resources? 

Yes, teachers are expected to be available to answer questions via email and/or chat sessions during regular school hours on days three through six, depending on the course and grade level being instructed.

Will PSSA and Keystone testing still occur in the Spring?

The Pennsylvania Department of Education has canceled all PSSA testing and Keystone Exams for the 2019-20 school year.

Will proms and graduations be canceled?

We do not know the answer at this time. 

Will Facility Rentals/Outside User Groups be allowed to use facilities? 

Effective Friday, March 13, the district will not permit external groups to use any internal building locations.

Can the public use WCASD athletic fields and tennis courts during the closure?

All WCASD athletic fields and tennis courts are closed at this time.
