Curriculum
The West Chester Area School District’s elementary curriculum is based upon the Pennsylvania State standards as well as research-based and developmentally appropriate practices. While the elementary curriculum emphasizes reading, writing, math, social studies, science, physical education, music and art our eleven elementary schools understand that young children learn best when a variety of activities are planned throughout the day in large group, small group and individual formats. The school district’s academic goals are also supported by flexible grouping, inclusion, integrated curriculum, technology and diligent progress monitoring.
Learning Supports
A special clinical teaching team works with our students to overcome learning difficulties. The team includes the building reading team, the classroom teacher, school counselor, school psychologist, the special education teacher, and the building principal. Other clinical specialists are available as needed. A summer school learning program is provided to our kindergarten through fifth-grade students who require remediation services over the summer months.
Our students who are identified as gifted experience a challenging academic curriculum which is enhanced by a variety of enrichment activities and accelerated studies.
Concerts and Assemblies
An orchestra program is available to students in grades three through five while band and choral programs begin in fourth grade. Students who participate in choral and instrumental programs perform in semi-annual concerts for their school’s community. Educational, informative and cultural assemblies are offered in each elementary building throughout the year. Many of the school’s assemblies are sponsored by the Home and School Association.
Family and Community Involvement
Individual school Home and School Associations and Parent Teacher Organizations provide financial support for enrichment programs and materials that enhance our curriculum. In addition to building a positive school climate, district families and community members also play an integral role as classroom and school-wide volunteers. Community service is evident through a number of activities and service projects.
