Curriculum
The Secondary Program reflects the diversity of the student body. Students may enroll in a multitude of courses that are both heterogeneously and homogenously grouped. Core areas such Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, and World Languages are leveled to match course rigor with student potential and achievement. In the elective areas, students are able to experience courses in art, music, drama, technology, business, distributive education, family and consumer sciences, and social sciences. Additional options are available at the Center for Arts and Technology operated by the Chester County Intermediate Unit.
Curriculum in all subject areasis based on national, state and local standards and reviewed on a regular basis. Curriculum development is coordinated from 6th through grade 12 to ensure continuity across schools and grades. District tests, developed by staff members, measure how well the curriculum is mastered.
Student Achievement is evident by the College Board SAT scores our students receive which are consistently above state and national averages. In the annual Pennsylvania System of School Assessment tests administered annually to students in grades 6 through 8 and 11 in the areas of reading, writing, mathematics and science, students consistently score above state averages with the majority of students scoring advanced. Approximately 94% of our graduates seek higher education.
Outside of the classroom, students may take part in a robust extra-curricular program. The primary purpose of the extra-curricular program in the West Chester Area School District is to promote the physical, social, emotional, intellectual and moral well-being of the participants. The extra-curricular program is an important and integral part of the total school program and is open to participation by all students regardless of individual differences.
